Veteran comedian Basketmouth has reacted to a bizarre and chaotic scene that unfolded in Lagos on Good Friday, where a man attempting to portray Jesus during a street reenactment was reportedly beaten by an angry crowd.
In a social media post that has since gone viral, Basketmouth expressed his shock and confusion over the incident, saying:
“The kind collect one Yoruba guy collect for Lagos yesterday unto say him wan act as Jesus on a Good Friday make me come dey wonder if the masses use Tinubu effect or na actual acting...”
According to reports, the unidentified man took on the role of Jesus during the traditional Good Friday dramatization, but things quickly escalated. The crowd, rather than playing along, allegedly beat the man so severely that he cried out for help blurring the line between performance and reality.
“E get as dem knack d guy reach, him begin cry for help. I come understand say this one don commot from acting,” Basketmouth added, highlighting the intensity of the beatdown.
While it’s unclear what triggered the violent reaction, online users are speculating whether it was genuine outrage or misplaced aggression fueled by socio-political frustrations, with some blaming “Tinubu effect” a phrase referencing rising tensions in the country.
Basketmouth concluded his post with a light-hearted but pointed remark:
“My people, how far?”
The incident has sparked conversations about public decorum, street performances, and how socio-economic pressure might be affecting the psyche of everyday Nigerians.
