
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
This was announced in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
“June 12 stands as a symbol of our nation's historic pursuit of truth, justice, peace, and a secured future,” the minister stated.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past 26 years reflects the resilience, strength, and renewed hope of its people.
Acknowledging that democracy thrives on continual improvement, the minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to uphold the universal principles of democracy, anchored on the freely expressed will of the people in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural future.
