A Memphis, Tennessee, man was accidentally shot by his dog after the pet jumped onto his bed and triggered a loaded firearm, police reported Wednesday. The victim was asleep next to his partner early Monday morning when he suffered a graze wound to his left thigh, which was treated at a hospital. According to the police report, Oreo, a one-year-old pit bull, got his paw stuck in the trigger guard, causing the gun to discharge. Authorities classified the incident as an “accidental injury” but did not specify the type of firearm involved. While gun-related incidents are common in the U.S., cases involving animals pulling the trigger are rare. In a similar case two years ago, a German shepherd in Kansas fatally shot a man by stepping on a hunting rifle. In 2018, a pit bull-Labrador mix shot its owner in Iowa. The victim’s girlfriend told local station Fox 13 Memphis that she was asleep when the gun fired. Describing Oreo as a playful dog, she emphasized the importance of firearm safety, saying, “Keep the safety on or use a trigger lock.”
