Businessman and socialite Emeka Okonkwo, widely known as E-Money, has publicly called on Nigerians to stop spraying the Naira or any other currency at parties, stressing that the practice is illegal. In a Thursday Instagram post, E-Money highlighted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) directive, stating that throwing or spraying money at events amounts to currency abuse. “Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” he said. “If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket or in a bowl or container in front of the person at the party. Don’t drop any currency on the floor,” E-Money added, warning that ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse. This message follows reports that E-Money was recently arrested and questioned by the EFCC over alleged mishandling of the Naira and U.S. Dollar at public events. The EFCC has repeatedly warned that spraying or mutilating currency is a criminal offense under Nigerian law. In recent months, the agency has intensified its crackdown, focusing on high-profile figures caught on camera improperly displaying cash at social gatherings.
