The Federal Government has filed a lawsuit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, over alleged defamatory statements made during a live television broadcast. The case, marked CR/297/25, was lodged at the Federal Capital Territory High Court on May 16, 2025, with Akpoti-Uduaghan listed as the sole defendant. According to the government, the senator is accused of making statements with the knowledge or reasonable belief that they would damage another person’s reputation—an act classified under Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990. The charge carries a penalty under Section 392 of the same law. Listed as witnesses in the case are Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, both of whom are expected to present evidence during the trial.
