President Donald Trump on Saturday declared that his relationship with tech billionaire Elon Musk is effectively over.
He warned of potential serious consequences if Musk financially backs Democratic candidates opposing Republicans who support Trump’s major tax and spending legislation.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump refused to specify what those consequences might be and said there had been no discussions about launching any investigations into Musk.
When asked directly about the status of his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Trump responded, “I would assume so, yeah.”
The former president made it clear he has no interest in mending ties with Musk, stating, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
Despite the fallout, Trump said he hasn’t considered cutting U.S. government contracts with Musk’s companies, including Starlink and SpaceX.
WAFFI TV reports that tensions between the two escalated last week after Musk labeled Trump’s legislative proposal a “disgusting abomination.” Musk’s public opposition has reportedly complicated the bill’s progress in Congress, where Republican majorities are slim in both chambers.
