There is an unusually heavy security presence at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, as two rival factions of the party gear up to hold parallel meetings: a National Executive Committee (NEC) session and an expanded national caucus meeting. This development marks a deepening of the PDP’s ongoing leadership crisis. Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any potential unrest. At the heart of the dispute is the legitimacy of recent decisions made by the Acting National Chairman, which the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has condemned as unconstitutional and unilateral. Access to the party’s secretariat has been tightly controlled, with security operatives erecting barricades using traffic cones and patrol vehicles. Armed officers are also on standby, closely monitoring the area in anticipation of possible protests or clashes between the rival factions.
