The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed nine electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to compensate Band A customers in 557 streets for failing to meet the minimum 20-hour daily power supply requirement under the new tariff structure. Band A customers, who pay the highest electricity rates, are entitled to at least 20 hours of supply daily. According to NERC, the affected DisCos must carry out the compensation—either through electricity credits or improved supply—across 152 electricity feeders that underperformed in April. This directive is part of the April 2025 Multi-Year Tariff Order reviewed by our correspondent on Saturday. The DisCos under the directive include Abuja, Eko, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Ikeja, Ibadan, and Benin Electricity Distribution Companies. Enugu Electricity Distribution Company is also required to enhance power delivery to certain areas. This move comes a year after NERC implemented a controversial tariff hike exceeding 300% for Band A customers, tied to the promise of 20-hour daily electricity. However, many consumers continue to report unreliable power supply, rising operational costs, and shrinking disposable income despite the expanded Band A classification.
