The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress warning for residents in 19 states, the South-East, and coastal regions. According to NiMet, the most affected areas include North-Central and Eastern states such as Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the FCT. Other vulnerable regions include the South-West, coastal areas, as well as Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto. The advisory, released Tuesday morning, highlights rising temperatures and high humidity over the next three to four days, which may cause thermal discomfort. NiMet warns that potential health risks include fatigue, irritability, reduced focus, impaired motor skills, and decreased productivity. Residents in affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe. “Stay cool by using fans, air conditioning, or shaded spaces, and dress light by wearing breathable clothing. “Drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours (12 PM – 3 PM). VU Use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.”
