The United States has cautioned that corrupt Nigerian officials could face visa restrictions.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Monday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria emphasized that the fight against corruption is without borders and that accountability applies to even the most influential individuals.
“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas,” the Mission stated.
The U.S. has on several occasions reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. In the past, Washington has imposed visa bans on politicians accused of electoral malpractice and undermining democratic processes.
The latest warning comes amid growing concerns from transparency advocates about alleged mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office across various levels of government in Nigeria.
According to the U.S., restricting entry for corrupt officials forms part of its broader strategy to promote good governance, accountability, and respect for the rule of law in partner nations.
