The Ijaw People's Development Initiative (IPDI) has condemned recent attempts to sow discord between the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Chief Dennis Brutu Otuaro, PhD, and the Amayanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, HRM Ateke Tom, describing such efforts as malicious and unfounded.
This reaction follows unverified reports from some online platforms alleging a confrontation between Dr. Otuaro and HRM Ateke Tom during the monarch’s recent birthday celebration.
In a swift response, IPDI President, Comrade Ozobo Austin, debunked the claims, stating categorically that no confrontation occurred. According to him, both leaders shared warm moments during the event, which reflected their mutual respect and collaborative spirit.
Ozobo praised Dr. Otuaro’s performance as PAP Administrator, noting his unwavering commitment to peace, reintegration, and sustainable development in the Niger Delta. He highlighted Otuaro’s advocacy for improved stipends for ex-agitators and inclusion of impacted communities in the programme.
IPDI urged the public to ignore the false narratives being spread and instead recognize the positive strides being made by the current PAP leadership. The group stressed the need for collective support to strengthen the ongoing peace and development efforts in the region.
They cautioned stakeholders, ex-agitators, and leaders not to fall for divisive tactics by those who feel threatened by the progress under Otuaro’s leadership.
"Dr. Otuaro remains a key figure in maintaining stability and fostering development in the Niger Delta," Ozobo said. "Rumors of a rift with HRM Ateke Tom are baseless and driven by individuals with selfish interests who are frustrated by Otuaro’s refusal to be manipulated."
He added that the cordial relationship between Otuaro and the respected traditional ruler remains intact, and both continue to work in synergy for the region’s progress.
The group reiterated that under Otuaro’s leadership, PAP has successfully empowered ex-agitators through education, skills training, and reintegration, significantly reducing violence and improving socio-economic conditions in the region.
Ozobo concluded by emphasizing that those opposed to this progress are fabricating stories to derail the administration’s achievements. “We must not let the enemies of the Niger Delta succeed in creating division. Let us stay united and continue supporting Otuaro in his mission to bring lasting peace and development to our region,” he said.
