The House of Representatives has passed a resolution urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the recent increase in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transaction charges and the removal of free withdrawals for customers using other banks' ATMs. The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by lawmaker Marcus Onobun, who raised concerns about a CBN circular implementing the policy. Lawmakers expressed worries that the new charges would add financial strain on Nigerians. The House directed the CBN to halt the policy until it engages with relevant committees on banking, finance, and financial institutions. On February 10, 2025, the CBN announced that customers using ATMs of banks other than their own would now incur charges on every transaction. According to the circular, the existing three free monthly withdrawals for customers using other banks' ATMs will be discontinued. Effective March 1, 2025, customers withdrawing from another bank's ATM will be charged ₦100 per ₦20,000. For off-site ATMs—those located outside bank premises, such as in shopping malls or restaurants—an additional surcharge of up to ₦500 per ₦20,000 will apply, on top of the ₦100 statutory fee. The CBN justified the new charges by citing rising costs and the need to enhance ATM service efficiency nationwide.
