In a bold and brutally honest take, reality TV star and media personality Tacha Akide has sparked intense conversation across social media with her recent remarks about the state of Nigeria’s youth. In her words: "My generation of Nigerians is the dumbest and most cowardly. Funny how we blame the ones before us for ruining Nigeria at least they had the guts to fight. Ex-president Buhari, in his 20s, was part of a coup, fighting for what he believed in. But what are today’s 20-year-olds up to? Japa. > Believe me when I say we’ve not just failed the next generation… we’ve buried it." Tacha’s statement has struck a nerve. While some argue her words are harsh, others are applauding her courage for calling out the complacency, fear, and inaction that seem to plague much of Nigeria’s younger generation. In an age where “japa” the mass exodus of young Nigerians abroad has become a cultural norm, Tacha raises a painful question: *What happened to the spirit of protest, patriotism, and purpose? She contrasts today’s generation with the past where young Nigerians, regardless of motive or outcome, at least dared to challenge the system. Now, with rising insecurity, unemployment, and leadership failure, many youth are choosing escape over engagement, silence over resistance. Her statement isn't without controversy but that might be exactly the point. Tacha’s message is less an insult and more a wake-up call. A challenge to reflect. A mirror held up to a generation that has access to technology, global platforms, and information but often lacks unified action, political will, and civic courage. Whether you agree with her or not, one thing is clear: She’s not wrong for demanding more. Nigeria’s future won’t be saved by noise it will be saved by action. And perhaps, this painful truth is what we all need to hear.
