President Bola Tinubu has reportedly agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as the Governor of Rivers State, on the condition that he will not seek re-election in 2027, The Cable reports. The agreement was said to have been reached during a closed-door meeting held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa. In attendance were President Tinubu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, and a select group of lawmakers. According to sources within the presidency, the deal—aimed at restoring democratic stability in Rivers State—requires major concessions from all sides. One of the key conditions, insiders claim, is that Fubara will be allowed to complete his current four-year term but must relinquish any ambition to contest in the 2027 governorship election—a compromise he reportedly accepted, despite the limitation it places on his future political influence. The same source told The Cable that, as part of the deal, Wike would be given the authority to nominate all local government chairpersons across the state’s 23 LGAs, granting him considerable political leverage and effectively reestablishing his grassroots control.
