President Bola Tinubu has imposed a ban on the importation of foreign goods, particularly those that can be produced locally. He also restricted the hiring of expatriates for jobs that Nigerian contractors and artisans can handle, except in cases with compelling justification and explicit approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by the President at the presidential villa. Idris revealed that Tinubu approved a landmark policy framework titled the *Renewed Hope Nigeria First Policy*, designed to boost the domestic economy and prioritize local content. Describing it as a bold economic shift, Idris likened the policy to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda. He emphasized that the new policy places Nigeria at the core of all public procurement and business activities, aiming to empower local industries and reduce reliance on foreign imports. “This policy seeks to foster a new business culture that is bold, confident, and very Nigerian,” Idris said. “It aims at making government investment directly benefit our people and industries by changing how we spend, how we procure, and how we build our economy,” he added.
