Ukrainian forces have captured Kehinde Oluwagbemileke, a 29-year-old Nigerian national allegedly fighting for the Russian military in the ongoing Ukraine war. According to Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” project, Oluwagbemileke was apprehended by the Freedom of Russia Legion—a unit made up of Russian volunteers supporting Ukraine—in the Zaporizhzhia region after serving with Russian troops for five months. The project reported that Oluwagbemileke had lived in Russia for four years before being arrested on drug charges. To avoid imprisonment under Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code, he allegedly agreed to join Russia’s military campaign in exchange for a reduced sentence. “Kehinde is among thousands of mercenaries from third countries recruited by Russia’s Defence Ministry to fight in Ukraine,” the organisation stated, adding that many foreign fighters are misled about the nature of the conflict and treated as expendable. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again urged foreign nationals not to enlist in the Russian military and instead contact the “I Want to Live” programme. Oluwagbemileke’s case adds to the growing number of foreigners captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting on Russia’s side.
