Fashion designer Veekee James is getting candid about the personal cost of success especially as a woman in a society where ambition can sometimes be misunderstood.
In a heartfelt message, the fashion entrepreneur opened up about how her professional achievements affected her romantic relationships before marriage.
“Because of my success in business, many men were intimidated. Before marriage, I dated men who were uncomfortable with how far I had come. Any small thing they would say, ‘It’s because of what you think you have.’ And this is what happens to most successful women.”
Now celebrated for her luxury fashion brand and red-carpet masterpieces, Veekee’s journey began humbly, surrounded by thread, fabric, and the sewing machine of her mother a tailor.
“The way I started fashion, I never imagined I would be a designer. My mom was a tailor, and we used to help her while she worked. I only later discovered that it was more than just a chore it was a talent.”
Originally, she envisioned a more traditional path: academics, a degree, and a formal career. But life had other plans.
“I always thought I’d go to school, get an education, and be a career woman. But today, I’m the owner of a very big fashion brand.”
Her choice to leave school early in order to build her business was not taken lightly but it paid off. Still, she’s careful not to generalize her journey for others.
“I never regret dropping out from school to pursue my dream. If I didn’t, I’m not sure I would be where I am today. But if you have the opportunity to study, do it. The best decision for me might not be the best decision for you.”
Veekee also tackled the pressure placed on successful women when it comes to marriage and societal judgment.
“If you’re a successful woman, there’s a way people will always be looking at you. If you don’t get married early, they’ll say it’s because you have too much influence or too much money and that men are afraid of you. But don’t limit yourself. Any man that can’t be with you is not man enough.”
