Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has criticized the Nigerian movie industry for prioritising “fine faces” over genuine acting talent, especially on YouTube productions. The Living in Bondage star, with over three decades of experience, said movie-making is about performance, not appearance, and vowed to use his YouTube platform to promote lesser-known but skilled actors. Recalling how sponsors once destroyed careers by branding some performers “unmarketable,” he warned that the same dangerous culture is returning, stifling creativity and shutting out fresh talents. Kanayo lamented that a few popular faces now dominate the streaming space, with some booked out for nearly a year, leaving little room for newcomers. He stressed that he does not want jobs because of his fame but because of his ability to deliver excellence. The veteran urged aspiring actors to join him in creating impactful stories, assuring them that talent, not looks, should drive Nollywood. Concluding on a hopeful note, he expressed optimism that this phase will pass, insisting the industry must return to celebrating real craft over superficial appeal.
