Millions of WhatsApp users in Nigeria and globally may soon be cut off from the platform, as WhatsApp begins phasing out support for outdated devices. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has announced that starting May 5, 2025, the messaging app will cease to function on smartphones that no longer meet updated performance and security requirements. This change will impact both personal users and small businesses using WhatsApp Business. Meta explained the decision as part of its commitment to improving app stability, user security, and compatibility with evolving operating systems. The company stated: “As technology advances, phasing out support for older hardware is necessary to maintain app functionality and security.” On the iOS side, WhatsApp will no longer support devices running below iOS 15.1. Affected models include: - iPhone 5s - iPhone 6 - iPhone 6 Plus These iPhones are limited to iOS 12.5.7 and cannot be updated further. This move follows WhatsApp’s earlier decision to end support for Android 4.4 (KitKat) as of January 1, 2025. Devices that will no longer be supported include: Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD HTC: One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601 LG: Optimus G, L90 Nexus 4 Sony: Xperia Z, SP, T, V Users who wish to continue using WhatsApp are encouraged to upgrade to devices running iOS 15.1 or later, or Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. Meta also advises backing up chat histories before switching devices to prevent data loss.
