Okon will bring back quality to Falcons – Mbachu

Former Super Falcons player, Stella Mbachu, has praised the Nigeria Football Federation over the appointment of Edwin Okon as a member of the technical crew of the women’s national team.

The NFF on Tuesday appointed Okon, a former head coach of the Falcons, as the Chief Scout of the team, amid concerns over the dwindling fortunes of the record African champions in recent times.

Okon, head coach of Rivers United, led the Falcons to win the 2014 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Namibia.

The following year, he led the African champions to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, where they crashed out of the group stage after losing to the United States of America and Australi, and managing a draw against Sweden in Group D.

Speaking with The PUNCH, Mbachu, who was part of Okon’s team that conquered the continent in 2014, said the federation made the right decision appointing Okon.

“I think the new additions to the Super Falcons is very good and I want to commend whoever gave the NFF the idea to remember the group of coaches that were doing well with the team before they left and realising that there is a need for them to come back.

“It is very nice, especially the inclusion of Okon, because he had been with the team before and I am sure that he will assist the coach Randy Waldrum. I am confident that if Waldrum listens to him, they will build a very strong team.

“Okon will add a lot of value to the team; he will bring back quality lacking in the team because he had good results in the past.”
