The National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) has raised concerns over the increasing exploitation of cashew farmers at the farm gate, disruptions in the industry’s value chain, and the harmful effects of unregulated foreign involvement in Nigeria’s cashew market. Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, NCAN President Ademola Adesokan highlighted the urgent need for structural reforms to address these challenges.
Expanding on the issue, the National General Secretary of the Association, Olarotimi Ayeka, emphasized that the unregulated actions of exporters and middlemen have severely disrupted the industry’s value chain. He emphasized that the association had appealed to the Federal Government for intervention to restore order and uphold international best practices. He also stated that the government has established a temporary framework to tackle the challenges.
Ayeka concluded with a warning that unrestrained foreign control could severely weaken the sector because Nigeria ranks as one of Africa’s leading producers of raw cashew nuts, with an estimated annual production of between 300,000 and 500,000 metric tonnes.Despite its potential, the industry faces challenges. About 85% of Nigeria’s cashew exports are raw nuts sent mainly to India and Vietnam, with minimal local processing.
