Nigeria, alongside countries worldwide, will bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024. Despite Nigerians’ apprehension about the upcoming year, it shouldn’t spoil the celebrations. Let’s acknowledge Kiribati as the first country to ring in the ‘Happy New Year’ moment.
Specifically, Kiritimati Island, also known as Christmas Island, part of Kiribati, sits in the earliest time zone, a staggering 19 hours ahead of New York City.
This island is 13 hours ahead of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. Auckland, New Zealand, will chime in about an hour later, marking noon in Nigeria. Lastly, Baker Island, despite being 650 miles away from Kiribati, is 26 hours behind due to time zone peculiarities.
At the time of writing, Kiritimati was merely 30 minutes away from welcoming 2024. Over 100,000 people are expected to witness London’s sold-out New Year’s Eve display in person.
However, the marvel of time zones should remind us to wish ‘Happy New Year’ with humility, considering that some have already lived in 2024 for almost half a day.
Even the unfulfilled promises of unserious leaders shouldn’t dampen the joyous spirit of the occasion.
