UN Allocates $20m To Ramp Up Food Security In Nigeria

Additionally, over half a million individuals might encounter critical levels of food insecurity during the lean season spanning from June to August.

During a news conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq revealed that an amount of $20 million has been assigned by the United Nations to promptly enhance the efforts in addressing the distressing situation of food security and nutrition in the North-East region of Nigeria.

“With nine million dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund and $11 million from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, we will support the Government-led response efforts across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

“Assistance includes ready-to-eat food, access to clean water, health care and agriculture support,’’ he said.

As per reports from humanitarian collaborators, it is projected that nearly 700,000 children under the age of five are at risk of experiencing life-threatening severe acute malnutrition in the aforementioned region this year.

Additionally, over half a million individuals might encounter critical levels of food insecurity during the lean season spanning from June to August.

Haq emphasized that while the emergency funding would facilitate the initiation of the response, additional support is necessary for humanitarian partners to avert the onset of widespread hunger and malnutrition.

“The $1.3 billion humanitarian response plan for Nigeria is only 26 per cent funded,’’ he said.

During an update on Sudan, the deputy spokesperson highlighted the ongoing efforts of the humanitarian community in providing crucial support to the affected population.

It was revealed that on Tuesday, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs facilitated the transportation of a minimum of 388 trucks containing life-saving aid to different regions across the country.

Quoting the World Food Programme, Haq mentioned that the agency, which resumed operations in Sudan six weeks ago, has already delivered emergency food assistance to over one million individuals.
