Police Scrap Law Dismissing Unmarried Officers Over Pregnancy~ AIG
The Nigeria Police Force has scrapped regulations that required the dismissal of unmarried female officers who became pregnant while in service. Assistant Inspector-General of Police Aishatu Baju, the highest-ranking female officer in the Force, confirmed this development on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. Baju stated that all discriminatory provisions in the Police Act, including Section 127—which previously justified such dismissals—had been removed as part of ongoing police reforms. She said, “That section, along with any other part of the Police Act that discriminates against female officers, has been removed under the Police Act 2020. “The Inspector General of Police has also introduced the Nigeria Police Gender Policy to ensure full inclusivity and equal opportunities for all officers.” When asked directly whether unmarried female officers would still be dismissed if they became pregnant, Baju responded firmly, “No.” The issue gained national attention in 2021 when Police Corporal Omolola Olajide was dismissed in Ekiti State for becoming pregnant. The decision sparked public outrage, leading the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to challenge the regulation in court. Although the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the dismissal—ruling that officers were aware of the policy before joining—the NBA escalated the case to the Court of Appeal in Lagos. In May 2024, the appellate court struck down Sections 126 and 127 of the Nigeria Police Act, effectively ending the policy. With the latest reforms, Baju reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to eliminating gender-based discrimination and promoting inclusivity.

Court Dismisses Suit Seeking To Legalise Prostitution In Nigeria
An Abuja Federal High Court, presided over by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho, has dismissed a lawsuit aimed at securing the rights of commercial sex workers to operate without harassment from security agencies. In his ruling, Justice Omotosho held that prostitution is not recognized as a legal right under any Nigerian law or the Constitution. He further stated that sex workers could be arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to two years in prison under the Penal Code. The case was filed by the Lawyers Alert Initiative for Protection of Rights of Children, Women, and Indigent against the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), the FCT Minister, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). In the suit, marked THC/ABJ/CS/642/2024, the plaintiffs sought to prevent the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the AEPB from harassing, arresting, or prosecuting sex workers in Abuja. They argued that prostitution was a fundamental human right protected under Nigerian law. Filed on May 14, 2024, by lawyers Rommy Mom, Bamidele Jacobs, and Victor Eboh, the suit posed two key questions, including whether the AEPB’s mandate under Section 6 of its 1997 Act extends to the arrest and prosecution of women suspected of engaging in sex work. “Whether by the provision of Section 35 (1) (d) of the AEPB Act, 1997, women can be regarded as articles or their bodies regarded as goods for purchase?,” the judge was also asked to determine.

Delta community Protests Amputation Of 28 yr old Man’s Hand By Herdsmen
Vehicular movement to Bomadi and other coastal communities was brought to a standstill for several hours on Monday as enraged residents of Uduophori Community in Patani Local Government Area, Delta State, barricaded the only access road. The protest was sparked by the amputation of a 28-year-old man. The victim, Mr. Freedom Akpodiete—a motorcyclist, father of two, and sole provider for his family and elderly widowed mother—was reportedly attacked while transporting a passenger to Uduophori. The visibly angry protesters carried leaves and placards bearing messages such as *"Fulani, leave us alone,"* *"Stop raping our wives, women, and daughters,"* *"President Tinubu, rescue us from Fulani herdsmen killings,"* and *"Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, save us from herdsmen bondage."* They lamented that the community had been forced to abandon their farms due to the activities of marauding Fulani herdsmen. Addressing newsmen during the protest, the President General of Uduophori, Mr ThankGod Ado, said, “We are protesting due to the yearly and regular presence of herdsmen in our community and forest. “What prompted this one was the recent attack on one of our brothers whose hand was amputated by the suspected Fulani herdsmen after he was dragged into the forest. “We are not happy, and we are saying ‘enough is enough,’ and as peace-loving, law-abiding people, we don’t want a situation where the government would sit down to allow herdsmen to kill us all. “Our people can no longer go to their farms because of the incessant attacks of rape and ransom payment; our planted cassava is uprooted and given to their cows. “At times, they would come to the community to burgle petty traders’ stores to cart away foodstuffs, and when they accost our people in their farms, they will send their husbands home to go and bring money, and before they would return, the women have been raped. “We say no to these herdsmen, and we are calling on the federal, State, and local government to come and rescue us from these terrible people.” Also speaking, 85-year-old Pa Benjamin Obotorino said, “For over 15 years, we have been under the bondage of Fulani herdsmen, they would come to Uduophori with their cows to destroy our crops. “Their cows no longer eat grass as they feed on our cassava, yams, and other cash crops; we are tired of their continued killing, rapping, and maiming of people. “They rape our wives, women, and daughters, and they also rape men in the forest too and after which they will kill them; we are not happy, and we are calling on the government to come to our aid urgently.’ “When they kidnapped our women, they will ask us to pay a ransom of N80,000 to 100,000 to release them, and before they will set them free, they are being raped. We cannot continue like this, so we are calling for help.” The women’s leader of the Uduophori Community, Mrs London Edith, with tearful eyes, called for urgent assistance from the government and all other relevant authorities as they can no longer live with strangers in their land. An indigene of the Community, Mr. Henry Emaduku, said, “In 2023, Fulani herdsmen attacked one of our brothers Oghenegarhe Asadera, was attacked and his hand amputated, and in 2024, they attacked the head teacher of the primary school in the Community, and in this 2025, they also attacked Mr Freeborn Akpodiete and amputate his hand after collecting his android phone and unspecified amount of money. “And as I am speaking with you now, herdsmen have taken over our primary school 3 in the Community, and the school is currently shut before this recent attack on our brother as Chairman of Motorcycle/Keke riders, I am calling on the government to save us from herdsmen continued attack.” He added.

Two NDDC Staff Rescued In Bayelsa Forest After Three Days In Kidnappers’ Den
Operation Puff Adder operatives, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, have rescued two Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) staff abducted on Friday while traveling by river to Ayakoro community in Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State—the hometown of NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku. The rescued individuals are Akari Loveday, Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to the NDDC Managing Director, and Emmanuel Nathan Ogbuku. Senior police sources revealed that the rescue was made possible by intense pressure from Operation Puff Adder's tactical team, the state Commissioner's drone unit, a private security firm, Ability Security Services, and the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Soroh, which deployed gunboats to secure the river. A source within the police rescue team disclosed that officers and the kidnappers engaged in a high-speed chase through the creeks and rivers of Ayakoro, where the abduction occurred, extending into the Onuebum-Eboi and Otuogidi forests. "On Saturday, youths and vigilantes from Ewoi and Otuogidi provided crucial local intelligence. The Paramount Ruler of Ewoi urged them to support the security forces in rescuing the NDDC staff," the source said. The abducted individuals were reportedly left at Ayama burial ground after an intense gun battle. "The kidnappers abandoned them, likely unfamiliar with the Bayelsa forest terrain," the source added. The Anti-Kidnapping squad also joined Operation Puff Adder in the rescue operation. Following the successful mission, Ayakoro community residents erupted in celebration as CSP Chris Nwaogbo's team returned with the freed victims.
