Ancelotti Exposed As Real Madrid Struggle To Accommodate Mbappe
Kylian Mbappe's much-anticipated move to Real Madrid was meant to boost their Champions League dominance, but Arsenal had other plans. The Gunners silenced the French star and dumped Los Blancos out of the quarter-finals with a resounding 5-1 aggregate win, leaving coach Carlo Ancelotti under intense pressure.
Arsenal sealed their semi-final spot with a 2-1 away victory and will now face Mbappe’s former club, Paris Saint-Germain—ironically flourishing without him. Mbappe, chasing European glory with Madrid, limped off late with an ankle injury, dashing hopes of a dramatic comeback and casting further doubt on his coach’s future.
This Madrid side, fragile and inconsistent, is a far cry from last season’s double-winning outfit. For only the third time in 12 years, they’ve failed to reach the Champions League semis. Despite Mbappe’s 33 goals in 2025, his arrival has disrupted the balance, with Ancelotti struggling to blend him effectively alongside Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo.
Mbappe, often deployed centrally, frequently drifts left—clashing with Vinicius' natural zone—while Bellingham, once a key force through the middle, now looks diminished. With Joselu Mato’s departure to Qatar and no clear attacking alternative, Madrid resorted to aimless crosses against Arsenal’s unyielding defence—a tactic that proved futile and symbolic of a team in tactical disarray.
Ancelotti has been frustrated with his side on a regular basis this season, for their lack of “collective commitment” to defending.
The 65-year-old threatened Vinicius with substitution during the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Real Sociedad because the Brazilian was not running enough.
“That warning brought out the best in Vinicius — from then on, he increased the pace and quality,” said the Italian.
Ancelotti has been open about his future, knowing for weeks he may not be kept on for the last year of his contract.
For some time speculation has mounted that Madrid will look for a new coach in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp and Xabi Alonso the favourites.
“It could be that the club decide to change (coach), it could be this year — or the next when my contract expires, there’s no problem,” said Ancelotti on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s loss marked Real Madrid’s 12th defeat of the season—a stark contrast to just two losses throughout the entire 2023-24 campaign.
The absence of Toni Kroos, who departed last summer, has also left a void in midfield, with the current setup failing to convince.
In the aftermath of the Arsenal defeat, Madrid must take any lessons to heart quickly, especially with silverware still up for grabs.
They trail Barcelona by four points in La Liga, with a decisive Clasico looming in May that could determine the title. Barcelona have dominated the last two meetings, netting nine goals to Madrid’s two.
The two giants will also clash in the Copa del Rey final on April 26, and Madrid are set to compete in the Club World Cup this summer—though Ancelotti’s future remains uncertain.
If Mbappe is to finish the season with silverware and Ancelotti is to bow out with the send-off his legacy deserves, Madrid cannot afford to dwell on their Champions League collapse.
