ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Says FG Has ‘Destroyed Trust’ On 2009 Agreement
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of reneging on key agreements regarding the revitalisation and adequate funding of public universities in Nigeria. Addressing journalists at the University of Jos on Thursday, ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, said university lecturers have endured more than two years of unfulfilled promises and deliberate delay tactics by the government. He highlighted unresolved issues such as the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, payment of outstanding salary arrears, withheld promotions, and improved welfare for retired lecturers. “The general public should also note that ASUU has written several letters to the FGN drawing its attention to the need to resolve this crisis amicably. Lamentably, the FGN has always turned a deaf ear to all our pleas,” the ASUU president said. “As always, it is the FGN that has consistently pushed our union to embark on a strike action, and it is clear that ASUU may have no other option than to embark on an action to press the FGN to listen to our demands and do the needful “The government made promises on these issues. Regrettably, we are here today to inform the Nigerian public, through you, that these undisputed issues could lead to a crisis in our educational sector have met, as with other consequences, nothing but the same response,” he said. The ASUU chief rejected the government’s proposed tertiary institutions staff support fund loan scheme, describing it as a trap. “Our members do not need loans. What we need is the implementation of agreements that will improve our purchasing power. Government is still owing us three months’ salaries, yet they are asking us to borrow money,” he said. ASUU also criticised the proliferation of universities without sustainable funding, warning that such actions have lowered standards and global rankings. On pensions, the union lamented that professors who served for over 40 years now receive as little as ₦150,000 monthly, despite rising inflation and living costs. The union said it will await the outcome of a government meeting scheduled for August 28 before deciding its next line of action. Still, it announced that members will stage rallies across campuses next week to demonstrate their frustrations. Piwuna warned: “Time is running out. We cannot continue to wait endlessly while the future of nigerian universities is destroyed.”

2027: Fresh Crisis Looms In PDP Over Zoning Formula
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to grapple with internal divisions, as fresh disagreements over the zoning formula for the 2027 general elections have deepened rifts among southern leaders of the party. A group of stakeholders from the South, including State Chairmen, former Governors, National Assembly members, current and former members of the National Working Committee (NWC), as well as other prominent chieftains, have rejected as “illegal” a meeting scheduled for today in Lagos to discuss zoning arrangements. In a strongly worded statement, the leaders dismissed any “resolutions, communiqués or outcomes purportedly emanating from this meeting” as invalid and unrepresentative of the collective will of the PDP across Southern Nigeria. They insisted that “decisions reached in secrecy and exclusion cannot and shall not assume the authority of consensus.” The statement was signed by several top party figures, including Imo State Chairman Austin Nwachukwu, Abia’s Abraham Amah, Cross River’s Barr. Venatius Ikem, Akwa Ibom’s Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan, and Rivers’ Aaron Chukwuemeka. Others who endorsed the position include the National Vice Chairman (South-East), Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck, and the House Minority Leader, Hon. O. K. Chinda. Also backing the move were Senators Igwe Nwagu, Mao Ohuabunwa, George Sekibo, Mike Ama Nnachi, former National Secretary Rt. Hon. Onwe S. Onwe, Deputy National Legal Adviser Barr. Okechukwu Osuoha, former Ebonyi Legal Adviser Barr. Mudi Erhenede, among several others. The statement titled; “Re: Purported Meeting of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit,” reads; “The attention of the undersigned State Chairmen of the People’s Democratic Party PDP from the South and some critical stakeholders has been drawn to a meeting ‘nicodemously’ summoned in Lagos today 21st August 2025 by some persons purporting to do so on behalf of PDP Members of the South tagged ‘PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit’ convened by the Admin Secretary, Zoning Committee of the PDP at the behest of the Chairman Zoning Committee (H.E Senator Duoye Diri) at the Legend Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. “The said meeting tagged ‘a summit’ was allegedly convened in the name of the three geo-political zones of Southern Nigeria — South East, South South and South West. “It is highly regrettable and indeed deeply disturbing that such a meeting was convened without the courtesy of inviting several State Chairmen from the South East and South South, as well as the duly elected National Secretary and Deputy National Legal Adviser of our great party. Even more troubling is the inexplicable exclusion of several national officers, eminent leaders and critical stakeholders of the PDP. “Shockingly, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly and other principal officers of our party from the South-South and South-East were also deliberately sidelined and denied participation in a meeting where such far-reaching and sensitive decisions on zoning, power rotation and political equity are to be discussed. “Equally concerning is the deliberate omission of most former governors from the South East and South South, who, by every standard of history, pedigree and institutional memory, remain critical stakeholders in any conversation about the future direction of our party. “Such a brazen disregard for established structures and statutory organs of the PDP not only offends the spirit of collective decision-making but also risks undermining the very foundation upon which our party was built. “The PDP, since inception, has been anchored on the values of inclusivity, equity, consultation and collective responsibility. “Any process that deliberately sidelines key stakeholders, ignores the legitimate authority of national officers and excludes elected leaders and ranking lawmakers erodes trust, fuels division and threatens party cohesion at a time when unity is most needed. “For the avoidance of doubt, we categorically dismiss any resolutions, communiqués or outcomes purportedly emanating from this meeting as neither binding on, or reflective of, the collective will and aspirations of the PDP family across Southern Nigeria. Decisions reached in secrecy and exclusion cannot and shall not assume the authority of consensus. “More particularly, the said summit is premature and targeted at protecting the interest and selfish ambition of a select few as the Zoning Committee set up by the 101 NEC is yet to present its report for ratification by the party. “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the unity, stability and electoral fortunes of the PDP and call upon all well-meaning leaders and stakeholders to resist any attempt to manipulate zoning arrangements through exclusionary tactics or clandestine maneuvers. “The South East and South South zones, alongside our counterparts in the South West, remain united in the pursuit of fairness, justice, and equity — the very ideals that have sustained our party’s relevance and credibility over the years. “As custodians of the mandate entrusted to us by our members, we remain resolute in defending the integrity of the PDP and ensuring that any decisions affecting Southern Nigeria within the PDP are reached through proper consultations, transparency and inclusiveness, in line with the established democratic ethos of our party. “We call on the National Working Committee NWC, the National Executive Committee NEC and all stakeholders of the party to disregard any outcome of the said meeting which is not only illegal but divisive. “Take notice that where any iota of regard is given to the outcome of the purported meeting, we shall not hesitate to take appropriate steps in line with our party constitution to resist same with full force.”

Alleged Fraud: Court Freezes Four Accounts Linked To Ex~NNPCL Boss, Kyari
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the interim freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the immediate past Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari, following fraud allegations. Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Tuesday after counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ogechi Ujam, filed an ex parte motion requesting that the accounts be frozen pending the conclusion of the Commission’s investigations. In his ruling, the judge held that the EFCC’s application was meritorious and accordingly granted the request. “I have listened to the counsel for the applicant and gone through the affidavit evidence with the exhibits and written address attached. I found that this application is meritorious and it is hereby granted as prayed,” the judge held. Justice Nwite then adjourned till Sept 23 for a report on the matter. On August 11, 2025, the EFCC filed the motion ex parte before the court to seek an order freezing the bank accounts because the accounts are owned by Kyari, “who is currently being investigated in a case involving the offences of conspiracy, abuse of office and money laundering pending the conclusion of the investigation.” In the affidavit attached to the ex parte, Amin Abdullahi, an EFCC investigator attached to the Special Investigation Unit, said the commission received and investigated a petition dated April 24 and filed by a group, the Guardian of Democracy and Rule of Law, against Kyari. He said he was a member of the team assigned to investigate the petition. “Upon receipt of the petition referred to in Paragraph 4 above, my team carried out several investigation activities which included seeking and obtaining bank records from commercial Banks,” he said. He said the preliminary investigations found that two of the bank accounts carry the name of Mele Kyari, while the other two have the name of a non-governmental organisation, Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief. The accounts were listed as: “Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575055 and Jaiz Bank number: 0018575141 with both account names as Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief.” The anti-graft agency argued that the bank accounts in respect of which the reliefs are sought are subject matters of investigation by the Commission about misappropriation of funds and criminal breach of trust. The anti-graft agency also said that the preliminary investigation conducted thus far revealed that the bank accounts are linked to Mr Kyari, who has been using them to receive suspicious inflows from NNPC and various oil companies that have dealings with NNPC. “That bank records further revealed that these accounts are controlled and managed by Mr Kyari through his family members who are acting as fronts,” he said. Abdullahi also said the investigation so far carried out revealed “that N661,464,601.50, which are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, were warehoused in four different accounts. “These funds were traced to Mele Kolo Kyari, who is the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). “Further investigation revealed that the said transactions in the various accounts were disguised as payments for a purported book launch and activities of a non-governmental organisation (NGO). “That the Commission has written to Jaiz Bank, where the accounts referred to are domiciled, for the hard copies of the comprehensive account details. While the response of the Bank is being awaited, the Commission has written to post a “no debit” instruction on the accounts, which will only last for 72 hours. “That I was informed by M.A. Babatunde Esq., learned counsel to the Applicant during official briefing at EFCC Headquarters, and I verily believe him that an order of this honourable court is necessary to freeze the said accounts clearly described in schedule 1 to the motion paper, while investigation is ongoing. It also said, “That there is a need to preserve the funds in the identified bank accounts pending the conclusion of the investigation and possible prosecution”. “That it is in the interest of justice to grant this application”.
