Niger Delta Activist Urges Accountability In Ecological Funds, Faults Governors For Worsening Flood Crisis
Prominent environmental and development advocate from the Niger Delta, Comrade Mulade Sheriff, has called on state governments in the region to transparently and effectively utilise ecological funds to combat the persistent flooding and erosion threatening lives and livelihoods. Mulade criticised the management of ecological funds by the Niger Delta governors, noting that despite the federal government’s disbursement of over N600 billion nationwide for erosion control and flood mitigation, little has changed in the region over the last decade. “We appreciate the federal government’s commitment to reducing ecological damage across flood-prone states,” he said. “However, in the Niger Delta, despite receiving significant portions of these funds, there has been no tangible improvement. Communities continue to suffer yearly flooding, destruction of farmlands, food shortages, and rising unemployment.” He accused state administrations of converting the ecological fund into what he described as a “looting jamboree,” often under the guise of politically appointed flood management committees that fail to deliver real solutions. “The perennial flooding and its devastating impact are largely due to failures of governance and widespread corruption,” Mulade stated. “Rather than investing in proper drainage systems, sustainable waterway management, and modern resettlement infrastructure, funds are diverted, and temporary IDP camps are set up without basic amenities like potable water, sanitation, or hygiene facilities.” Highlighting the harmful practice of blocking natural waterways and unchecked deforestation, he stressed that the crisis is compounded by political interference and lack of accountability. As a solution, Mulade urged Niger Delta states to establish dedicated, professionally managed agencies responsible for overseeing ecological projects, constructing stormwater dams, restoring drainage channels, and safeguarding natural waterways. “An independent agency focused solely on flood prevention and management is critical to ensuring that funds serve their intended purpose—protecting lives, property, and the environment,” he concluded.

US To Revoke Citizenship Of 25 Million Naturalised Immigrants
The United States government has moved to step up efforts to revoke citizenship from certain naturalised Americans, following the release of a Justice Department memo instructing federal attorneys to prioritise denaturalisation cases against individuals who committed particular crimes or misrepresented facts during the naturalisation process. According to The Guardian’s report on Monday, the memo — dated June 11 — urges civil proceedings against those who “illegally procured” citizenship or did so through “concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.” In contrast to criminal trials, people facing civil denaturalisation are not entitled to legal representation, and the government’s burden of proof is lower. At the heart of this push, the report notes, are roughly 25 million naturalised U.S. citizens who were born abroad, based on 2023 data. The memo also outlines 10 priority categories for denaturalisation. According to the document, the focus will be on individuals involved in war crimes, extrajudicial killings, serious human rights abuses, or those convicted of crimes who still pose a threat to the U.S., including gang members and other naturalised criminals. The Justice Department’s civil rights division has also been tasked with advancing several of former President Trump’s policy objectives — such as dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within government and ending transgender healthcare programmes. Meanwhile, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reported its 13th in-custody death for the fiscal year starting in October 2024, already exceeding the 12 deaths recorded during the entire previous fiscal year, which ended in September 2024. Last Friday, Jim Ryan, president of the University of Virginia, resigned amid a Justice Department civil rights division probe into the university’s DEI programmes and its use of race and ethnicity in scholarships and other initiatives. In a separate move, the Justice Department recently filed lawsuits against 15 U.S. district attorneys in Maryland over an order blocking the immediate deportation of migrants appealing their removal. Reports suggest the civil rights division is facing internal upheaval, as its historical mission to tackle racial discrimination is being overtaken by new priorities tied to presidential executive orders. According to a recent National Public Radio report, around 250 attorneys — about 70% of the division’s legal staff — are believed to have departed between January and the end of May. The memo’s renewed focus on denaturalisation has already had concrete effects: at least one individual has reportedly lost their U.S. citizenship in recent weeks.

Tinubu May Reinstate Fubara, Rivers Lawmakers In July
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly set to reinstate the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, along with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly later this month. This move follows a successful truce brokered between Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Presidency sources told *The PUNCH* that Tinubu reached the decision after a closed-door reconciliation meeting held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting was attended by Fubara, Wike, the suspended Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and several lawmakers. The Rivers political crisis escalated on March 18, 2025, when Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers for six months. In a national broadcast, the President cited security concerns, including pipeline vandalism allegedly ignored by the governor, as grounds for his decision. The conflict has its roots in a power struggle dating back to October 2023, when Fubara fell out with Wike—his political mentor—over control of the state’s political machinery. This rift led to impeachment moves against Fubara by 27 pro-Wike lawmakers. Tinubu had previously mediated the dispute in October 2023 through a peace meeting at the Presidential Villa, but the agreement quickly collapsed. The crisis deepened in early 2024 when a Rivers State High Court ruling allowed four pro-Fubara lawmakers to legislate without interference from the larger pro-Wike faction. Violence marked the political standoff: part of the State Assembly complex was bombed ahead of the attempted impeachment, while a dynamite explosion hit near Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt during a pro-Wike protest. During disputed local government elections in December 2023, two LGA offices and the APC secretariat were set on fire. In a key legal twist, the Supreme Court later reinstated Martins Amaewhule as Speaker and recognized the pro-Wike lawmakers, while also annulling the LGA elections held by the Fubara-led administration in February 2024. Subsequently, the Assembly demanded Fubara re-present the state budget within 48 hours, but he was blocked from entering the complex. Tensions peaked in March when pro-Wike lawmakers served impeachment notices on Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing alleged misconduct. Tinubu responded by imposing emergency rule and appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator—a move that drew legal and public criticism. Although Fubara’s reinstatement was initially expected in September, Presidency insiders confirmed Tinubu’s plan to restore him and the Assembly sooner. The breakthrough reportedly came after last Thursday night’s private meeting at the Villa, raising hopes of an end to the months-long political crisis in Rivers State. “Fubara is happy with the peace brokered by the President,” a source familiar with the talks said. “Given the way things have progressed—Fubara and Wike were recently seen riding together and exchanging pleasantries—the deal for Fubara’s return is sealed.” Responding to inquiries about the expected timing of the reinstatement, a Presidency insider stated, “At the latest, Fubara should resume as Rivers State Governor this month. Once the President returns from his visits to Saint Lucia and Brazil, he will make the formal announcement.” A separate source confirmed that during the Thursday night meeting, Tinubu personally informed Fubara that he should “start preparing to return to office” as part of a final reconciliation arrangement with Wike. Delta: Tensions Ease In Tuomo As Burutu Council Chairman, Takeme Leads Reconciliation Effort
Tuomo, a riverside settlement in Delta State’s Burutu Local Government Area, is witnessing a welcome return to calm following the intervention of local authorities to defuse a simmering leadership dispute. On Monday, Burutu LGA Chairman, Hon. Dr. Julius Takeme, led a peace mission to the community, overseeing reconciliation talks and reaffirming the administration’s commitment to maintaining stability. Dr. Takeme underscored his administration’s dedication to advancing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s peace agenda across Burutu LGA. Emphasizing the importance of unity and lawful governance, he addressed the root of the conflict—a contested process for selecting a new Amananawei (traditional head)—which had sharply divided the community. "The council will not condone lawlessness or abuse of authority," Dr. Takeme warned, making clear that acts of intimidation, assault, or extrajudicial detention would not be tolerated. Speaking directly to Tuomo Community Chairman Mr. Edonyaibo Morentei Warebi and the newly recognized Amanana-owei, Chief Arebebe Ebiyemi, he called for leadership grounded in legality and inclusivity. “Leadership must operate within the law, free of coercion,” he advised, urging both men to serve as unifying figures and deliver on their electoral pledges. He also cautioned against any mismanagement of the reconciliation process, assuring residents that the government remained steadfast in its commitment to their safety and wellbeing. Accompanying Dr. Takeme was a formal delegation that included the Nigeria Police Area Commander for Burutu, ACP Redengha Timpa, whose presence on the ground was pivotal in ensuring order. Senior local government officials also joined the mission, underscoring a coordinated and unified approach by the council. During his visit, Dr. Takeme praised the police for their professionalism, singling out ACP Timpa’s steady involvement as essential in de-escalating tensions and restoring public confidence. Offering a vote of thanks, Chief Arebebe Ebiyemi expressed deep gratitude for the chairman’s sustained support and vowed to prioritize peace and unity in Tuomo. Community Chairman Mr. Warebi pledged that his leadership would focus on inclusive governance and dialogue, describing this as a critical moment to rebuild trust and mend community divisions. Chief Ebiyemi further assured the administration of his commitment to working collaboratively for the benefit of all Tuomo residents, signalling hope for a more peaceful and cohesive future.

Iran Indirectly Issues ‘Death’ Threat Against Trump
Iran has indirectly threatened U.S. President Donald Trump with death after a prominent cleric declared that issuing threats against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, amounts to a curse and a grave sin under Islam—an offense punishable by death. This comes nearly two weeks after Trump indirectly targeted Khamenei, calling him an easy mark. “We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now,” he said in comments to reporters. Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, a prominent cleric from Qom, south of Tehran, stopped short of mentioning Trump by name but issued a religious ruling declaring that threats against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei or other senior religious figures are so severe they warrant the death penalty under Islamic law, according to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA. Makarem Shirazi’s statement came in response to a question from a follower specifically asking about Trump. He explained that “individuals or regimes that attack an Islamic government or threaten or act against its religious leaders are regarded as ‘Mohareb’”—a term meaning enemies of God or those who wage war against God. As such, he added, it becomes an obligation for Muslims to confront and punish these “enemies.” Although he did not explicitly name Trump, the Ayatollah clarified Islamic teachings, which hold that those who fight and punish the enemies of Islam are considered holy warriors and receive divine favour.
