FG Vows Equal Response As US Tightens Visa Rules
The United States government has directed Nigerian visa applicants to disclose their social media accounts and online activities spanning the last five years, cautioning that non-compliance could lead to visa denial. Reacting swiftly, the Federal Government vowed to reciprocate the new U.S. visa policy with equivalent measures. In a statement released yesterday via its official X handle, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned that applicants who fail to comply may also be barred from future entry into the country. The updated visa guideline builds on an earlier policy that applied primarily to international students, requiring them to provide their social media details and disable privacy restrictions to allow thorough vetting. The Mission explained that the regulation forms part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration tightening efforts aimed at strengthening “national security.” Under the new rule, visa applicants must now provide details such as email addresses, usernames, handles, and telephone numbers linked to all social media platforms and applications used within the past five years. Applicants who operated multiple accounts, usernames, handles, or phone numbers on a single platform during the same period are also required to disclose them in the DS-160 form. “Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used from the last five years on the DS-160 visa application form. Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. “Omitting social media information on your application could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future U.S visas. “Enter information associated with your online presence, including the types of online providers\platforms, applications and websites that you use to collaborate, share information and interact with others. List the username, handle, screen name and other identifiers associated with your social media profile,” the Mission said.

Paternity crisis: 1 In 4 Nigerian Fathers Not Biological Parents~ Report
Amid growing concerns over paternity disputes and deepening trust issues in Nigerian households, a fresh report by Smart DNA Nigeria has revealed that one in every four paternity tests still returns a negative result. The Lagos-based genetic testing company, in its 2025 Annual DNA Testing Report released this week, disclosed that 25 per cent of tests conducted between July 2024 and June 2025 confirmed that presumed fathers were not biologically related to the children tested. Although slightly lower than the 27 per cent recorded in 2024, the figure underscores what the firm described as a “disturbing and persistent trend.” Providing insights into the findings, Smart DNA’s Operations Manager, Elizabeth Digia, said: “These results are not just statistics; they reflect deep issues of trust, relationships, and the socio-economic and legal realities confronting Nigerian families. Our duty is to deliver certainty through accurate testing, while ensuring that the sensitive nature of these revelations is handled with care.” The report further highlighted that firstborn children—especially sons—were disproportionately affected, with firstborn boys recording a staggering 64 per cent exclusion rate, far higher than subsequent siblings. It also noted a sharp rise in DNA testing linked to immigration, which accounted for 13.1 per cent of all tests conducted within the year. This surge, the report explained, is driven by Nigeria’s ongoing emigration wave, widely known as the “Japa” phenomenon, as more families pursue documentation required for relocation abroad.

We’ve Disbursed N419bn Conditional Cash Transfers To Over 5m Nigerians~ FG
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has announced plans to reach more than 2.19 million Nigerians this August through its conditional cash transfer programme. The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, disclosed this on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. “In August, we are going to reach 2,190,000 people. The National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will identify the most vulnerable Nigerians from the national social register,” he explained. According to him, the programme is designed to provide direct cash support to the most vulnerable citizens. "For those Nigerians, it is a rapid conditional cash transfer, so far we have disbursed N419 billion to 5.968 million Nigerians," he said. "Based on the National Social register, we have distributed 71% to the Northern part of the country and 29% to the Southern part." He disclosed that another round of disbursement would take place before the end of the month. "Another N54 billion will be disbursed at the end of August to almost 2.119 million Nigerians and we are shifting from doing transfer anonymously, it will be done publicly, we will call the Press and give data," Sununu added. "We can even go as far as showing the number of beneficiaries for each state. "Where we had problems before now was that things were not being made public, but now, as part of our accountability and transparency, we will tell each state, this is the amount we are giving to your state, and these are the beneficiaries. "They can confirm, and anybody who wants to confirm can confirm with the World Bank." The minister also noted that the transfers would be made in three phases. "There are three tranches of N25,000 each, and that will make it N75,000 in total for each beneficiary," he said. Over time, the conditional cash transfer scheme of the Nigerian government has been marred by controversy of poor accountability and corruption.

Oborevwori Launches Widows Scheme, Approves N15,000 Monthly Stipend With Free Healthcare
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday launched the Widows Welfare Scheme aimed at providing financial assistance and healthcare support to 10,000 widows across the state. At the ceremony, Oborevwori reaffirmed his long-standing dedication to the wellbeing of widows, noting that it has been a priority throughout his private life and public service. He said, “Being a widow is not by choice, and it will never be anyone’s choice. Beyond the pain of losing a loved one, widows are left with the burden of survival. That is why this administration is determined to improve their living conditions and give them hope. “This scheme directly supports the second pillar of my administration’s MORE Agenda – Opportunities for All, and is a fulfilment of my campaign promise to run an inclusive government that carries everyone along, especially the poor and vulnerable. “Each widow will receive a monthly stipend of ₦15,000, to be paid directly into their bank accounts. Payments will commence immediately, with beneficiaries receiving their first stipend of ₦45,000 covering three months in arrears. “In addition to the cash support, all beneficiaries are being enrolled into the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, which guarantees them free access to healthcare services at accredited hospitals and primary health centres across their localities. This health insurance is even more important than the stipends because it ensures that no widow is denied medical care due to lack of funds.” The governor clarified that the Widows Welfare Scheme is entirely non-political, cutting across all religious and ethnic divides in Delta. He added that the beneficiaries were carefully selected through a transparent and community-driven process covering the 270 federal wards of the state, involving community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to verify claims of widowhood.

Dangote Truck Crushes Benz, Kills Three In Edo
A fatal accident occurred in Auchi on Sunday when a Dangote truck lost control and rammed into several vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz GLK, killing three persons and leaving one critically injured. The crash happened along the Auchi–Okpella–Okene Expressway, directly opposite the Omega Fire Ministry headquarters. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident was caused by brake failure as the truck descended a slope, leading to the deadly collision. Eyewitnesses said the impact crushed the Mercedes-Benz beyond recognition, instantly killing three occupants while one survivor was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Confirming the incident, the Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Paul Okpe, explained that officers promptly moved to the scene to evacuate the victims and clear the highway. He warned articulated vehicle operators to conduct routine checks on their trucks and adhere strictly to safety regulations. Reacting to the tragedy, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleman, whose church is located directly opposite the scene of the crash, condemned the recklessness of Dangote truck drivers. He described the incident as avoidable and vowed to challenge the company over repeated cases of carnage involving its vehicles. “This reckless killing by Dangote drivers will not go unchallenged,” Apostle Suleman said. “How many more lives must be lost before something is done?” Residents of Auchi and other road users have since called on the Dangote Group to take urgent measures, including retraining drivers and ensuring stricter enforcement of safety compliance, to avert further loss of lives. As of press time, the identities of the victims were yet to be released.

Mulade Urges Ijaw, Itsekiri Unity for Sustainable Growth
Peace and development advocate, Comrade (Dr.) Sheriff Mulade, has appealed to the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities of Delta State to strengthen ties of unity and cooperation in order to attract investment and foster development in their communities. Mulade, who holds the traditional title of Ibe Serimowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area, made the call during an interactive session with leaders of both groups in Warri. The United Nations Peace Ambassador stressed that genuine progress could only be achieved through harmony, tolerance, and collective pursuit of development, warning against divisive tendencies rooted in bias and supremacy struggles. According to him, “is the only way that we can grow and development our areas.” He expressed disappointment over the recurring ethnic discord in the region, stating, “Frankly, we are disgracing ourselves, and it is highly disappointing that many of us are beating the drum of ethnic war for personal interest and recognition. Please, we don't need division, but progressive ties that will attract investors and development to our communities.” Mulade further highlighted that despite contributing significantly to the state and national economy, both the Ijaw and Itsekiri communities have continued to suffer neglect due to their inability to forge a united front. “It is imperative to state that the Ijaw and Itsekiri areas in Delta State contribute the highest quota in the oil and gas industry as well as the blue economy, but we are deliberately deprived, neglected and shortchanged from development because of ethnic division and hatred amongst ourselves, which has eluded us,” he said. The Niger Delta activist urged traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders across both groups to place peace and development above personal or ethnic pride. “I want to strongly appeal to our revered traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders to allow peace and development thrive. We are victims of underdevelopment because of our individual and ethnic pride that is affecting our growth and development. Today, all development efforts are concentrated in the uplands while neglecting the sources of the resources,” he lamented.

EFCC Recovers Billions in Refinery Fraud, Moves Against Ex~NNPCL Officials
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered a massive fraud scandal in the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri, leading to the recovery of more than ₦5 billion and $10 million. Investigations revealed that senior officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), in collusion with contractors, diverted billions through inflated contracts, questionable invoicing, and dubious payments. The commission is now finalising charges against both serving and former NNPCL executives. According to insiders, the EFCC is also pursuing an additional ₦10 billion and \$13 million traced to fraudulent contractors engaged in refinery rehabilitation projects. The probe, which is personally supervised by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, has exposed shocking details of how huge public funds were squandered. Olukoyede is said to be particularly concerned that Nigeria’s refineries remain inoperative despite the billions sunk into their maintenance. Documents obtained by investigators revealed that over \$1.5 billion was allocated to the Port Harcourt refinery, \$740 million to Kaduna, and \$656 million to Warri. Yet, none of these facilities has functioned effectively for decades, leaving the nation reliant on petroleum imports. A senior EFCC official confirmed that former management teams of the refineries have been interrogated on several occasions. “A total sum of \$10 million and ₦5 billion has so far been recovered from contractors and government officials indicted in the fraud. More recoveries are underway,” the source disclosed. Meanwhile, the EFCC is also probing fresh allegations of contract inflation worth about \$40 million, allegedly involving NNPCL officials and contractors responsible for procuring equipment for the refinery projects. With investigations concluded on several suspects, the anti-graft agency is preparing to arraign ex-NNPCL executives and refinery managers implicated in the multi-billion-naira fraud.

INC slams FG Over Worsening Insecurity
The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has faulted the Federal Government for failing to address the worsening insecurity across the country. Speaking in Yenagoa on Friday, INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, expressed dismay over the government’s inability to curb the recurring violence and killings in several regions. He stressed that Nigeria must not treat mass killings as a norm, insisting that every part of the country should feel the full weight of the law. His words, “the persistent killings in Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and some Southern states are deeply tragic and unacceptable. When the President of the Federal Republic – and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces – makes strong public pronouncement and issues marching orders, Nigerians expect decisive action, deterrence, and visible results. The fact that these attacks continue unabated speaks to a troubling combination of factors. “First, it underscores long-standing weaknesses in our security architecture – inadequate intelligence gathering, slow operational response, insufficient inter-agency coordination, and in some cases, the infiltration of criminal elements into local communities and the military without effective tracking. The perpetrators are emboldened when they perceive that consequences are minimal or that state security presence is reactive rather than preventive. “Secondly, this is not only a law enforcement challenge – it is a governance and justice problem. In many of these areas, communities feel abandoned, and justice for victims is either delayed or denied. That vacuum creates space for reprisals, cycles of violence, and the flourishing of non-state armed groups. “Thirdly, the government’s inability to find a lasting solution is partly because these killings are rooted in deeper issues: competition over land and resources, ethnic and religious intolerance, climate-induced migration pressures, and the proliferation of small and light fire arms. Without a holistic strategy that combines security enforcement with conflict resolution, justice delivery, and economic development, the cycle will persist.” The INC, therefore, called on President Tinubu to go beyond public pronouncements and ensure that security agencies are held accountable for measurable outcomes. The group also urged Mr. President to reorganize the special inter-agency task Forces with prosecutorial powers, backed by technology-driven intelligence, to dismantle these killer networks. “Former President Jonathan did it, though very late, but he is the only President that have ever taken decisive actions that saw Nigeria pushing the killers back to the fringe. “Nigeria can not normalise mass killings. Every region – from the Middle Belt to the far North, from the Niger Delta to the North-East – must feel the full weight of the law. This is not just a Plateau or Benue tragedy; it is a national emergency that threatens the soul of our federation.” The INC President warned that if the Federal Government fails to address the insecurity, it may lead to a situation where regions may demand to govern themselves, which could further destabilize the country. “If the federal government can no longer hold things together, we the Ijaws insist that, at the minimum, every region is allowed to govern themselves, as the worsening insecurity could nail the coffin of Nigeria as truly “Failed State,” he said.
