NAFDAC Clarifies Sachet Alcohol Ban Timeline
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified its position on the nationwide ban on sachet alcohol. Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the agency's FCT Directorate, stated in Abuja on Monday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the temporary suspension of the ban remains in effect only until December 31, 2025. He stressed that the recent ministerial decision to lift the ban is not permanent and urged the public to ignore any misinformation claiming the restriction has been permanently removed. “There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by Dec. 31, 2025. “After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will commence. “The minister granted this temporary relief to allow manufacturers and regulators time to collaborate and ensure a more structured and effective implementation of the ban,” Azikiwe stated.” He highlighted NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to sensitise the public across the country, noting that awareness campaigns had reached every state. “We have sensitised distributors, and we’ve emphasised that alcohol should not be sold to individuals under the age of 18, which is also clearly indicated on product labels,” he added. Azikiwe also commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for supporting the awareness drive. He reassured the public that NAFDAC remained fully committed to regulating alcohol consumption and reiterated that sachet alcohol products containing less than 200 milliliters would be phased out after Dec. 2025.

Joe Biden Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer
Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an "aggressive" form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement from his office released Sunday. The statement added that the 82-year-old Democrat received the diagnosis on Friday following a rise in urinary symptoms and the discovery of a new prostate nodule. He is currently evaluating treatment options. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” it continued. Cancer cells are commonly found in the prostates of men of Biden’s age, though in most cases they grow slowly. Hormone therapy is a common treatment that can shrink tumors and slow cancer growth, but is not a cure. According to the statement, Biden’s cancer was found to have “a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5).” Prostate cancer that looks “very abnormal” is assigned the highest rating, Grade 5, according to the American Cancer Society. The Gleason Score often indicates the sum of the grades from the two areas in the prostate that make up most of the cancer, but can also be calculated other ways. Biden left office in January this year as the oldest serving US president in history, and was dogged by questions over his health and age for much of his presidency. For years he had faced questions, including from Democratic voters, over whether he was too old — lacking in mental acuity or physical endurance — for a job as trying as the presidency. His response to doubters was a brisk: “Watch me.”

It added that isolated thunderstorms were likely in parts of Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States in the afternoon or evening. In the North-central, the forecast includes sunny skies with some clouds and isolated thunderstorms in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Plateau States. NiMet also forecasted morning thunderstorms in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States in the South, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day. Looking ahead to Tuesday, the agency predicted sunny skies with few clouds in the northern region in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms in parts of Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa States. “Isolated thunderstorms are also expected later in the day over parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States,” it said. In the North-central region, the forecast includes sunny skies with patches of cloud and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, and Niger States. Southern states, including Cross River, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, are expected to experience morning thunderstorms, with additional storms later in the day. NiMet urged the public to take necessary precautions as strong winds may precede thunderstorms. “Residents are advised to secure loose objects to prevent damage,” the agency said. It also urges residents to avoid driving under heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay clear of tall trees to avoid falling branches. The agency further encouraged airline operators to consult it for specific weather reports to aid flight planning.

Fubara Isn’t The One I’m Fighting~ Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims of a personal rift with the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, referring to him instead as his “son.” In an interview published by BBC Pidgin on Saturday, Wike dismissed reports of a direct clash with Fubara, clarifying that his real contention lies with those he believes are manipulating the governor for their own interests. “That one is not a battle,” Wike said. “He (Fubara) is my boy, he is my son. Why will I fight with him?” The former Rivers State governor insisted that his actions are aimed at confronting individuals he accused of attempting to exploit the system. “I’m only fighting against people who want to steal what they did not work for,” he added. “When you don’t defeat them, they will think they are in charge. Defeat them to the final stage. “Now, they are ashamed because they are being defeated. They are the ones pushing Fubara.” During a media parley with select journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike said Fubara had begun making reconciliatory moves. “The President has called for peace severally and I cannot sit down when the President has called for peace and I say, ‘I don’t want peace,” Wike said. “Yes, he came with two governors and one elder person. Unfortunately, the two governors are APC governors. So, I will not pursue him. He said he wants peace. That’s fine. I also want peace.”

The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has shared a total of N1.681 trillion among the Federal Government, 36 states, and 774 local government councils as revenue generated in April 2025. The amount, announced during FAAC's meeting in Abuja on Friday, marks an increase of N103 billion from the N1.578 trillion distributed in March 2025. According to the communiqué released after the meeting, the April 2025 revenue comprised N962.882 billion in statutory revenue, N598.077 billion from Value Added Tax (VAT), N38.862 billion from the Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL), and N81.407 billion from Exchange Difference earnings. Of the total revenue, the Federal Government received N565.307 billion, while the 36 states received N556.741 billion. Local government councils were allocated N406.627 billion. Additionally, N152.553 billion was distributed to oil-producing states as 13% derivation from mineral revenue. FAAC reported that the gross revenue for April stood at N2.848 trillion. However, deductions totaling N1.167 trillion were made—comprising N101.051 billion for the cost of revenue collection and N1.066 trillion for statutory transfers, refunds, interventions, and savings. The gross statutory revenue for April was recorded at N2.084 trillion—up by N365.595 billion from N1.718 trillion in March. Gross VAT revenue also saw a marginal increase, rising to N642.265 billion in April from N637.618 billion in March, reflecting a N4.647 billion growth. From the N962.882 billion distributable statutory revenue, the Federal Government received N431.307 billion, states got N218.765 billion, and local governments received N168.659 billion. N144.151 billion of this was allocated to oil-producing states as 13% derivation. Out of the N598.077 billion VAT pool, the Federal Government received N89.712 billion, the states N299.039 billion, and local governments N209.327 billion. The N38.862 billion EMTL revenue was distributed with the Federal Government receiving N5.829 billion, states N19.431 billion, and local governments N13.602 billion. From the N81.407 billion realized as Exchange Difference, the Federal Government received N38.459 billion, states N19.507 billion, and local governments N15.039 billion. A further N8.402 billion from this amount was disbursed as 13% derivation to oil-producing states. FAAC noted that revenue increases were recorded in Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT), Oil and Gas Royalties, VAT, EMTL, Excise Duty, Import Duty, and CET Levies during the review period. However, Companies Income Tax (CIT) experienced a significant decline. Overall, the April 2025 revenue performance reflects ongoing fluctuations in the federation’s income streams, even as efforts to boost non-oil revenue continue to yield encouraging results.

Nigeria Sitting On Keg Of Gunpowder~ Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that Nigeria is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder” due to the worsening hardship faced by its citizens. Speaking at Dele Momodu’s leadership lecture on Friday, Obasanjo expressed concern over the country’s deepening poverty, arguing that Nigeria should not be struggling with extreme poverty if China could lift 700 million people out of it. Offering a solution to widespread hunger across Africa, Obasanjo emphasized that education is a critical tool in the fight against poverty, stating, “Where there’s no education, invariably, there will be poverty.” He further stressed that national leadership plays a pivotal role in addressing hardship and deprivation. There’s no human endeavour that does not thrive on leadership. “To get it right, we must ensure no child is uneducated. “Nigeria can eliminate hunger and poverty with integrity, discipline, and good governance. “We can do it if China can lift 700 million people out of poverty. “Nigeria should have no business with abject poverty. If we don’t take responsibility, we all sit on a gunpowder keg. “Until we banish poverty in Africa, international communities will not recognize us as a serious continent,” he said.

May 16th: IYC Urges FG To Honour Boro As Hero, Lift Fubara's Suspension, Others
As part of activities marking the 57th remembrance of the late Niger Delta freedom fighter, Major Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide held a press briefing today, calling on the Federal Government to immortalise the fallen hero with national recognition. Addressing Nigerians, particularly the Niger Delta and Ijaw nation, the IYC described Boro as a “true liberator and pathfinder” who laid down his life at just 29 for the unity of Nigeria. This year’s theme, "Maj Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro: Celebrating the Legacy, Rekindling the Struggle", reflects the council’s commitment to sustaining Boro’s ideals. Recalling Boro’s bold proclamation of the Niger Delta Republic in 1966 and his leadership of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, the IYC highlighted his transformation from a revolutionary to a national hero, noting his contributions during the Nigerian Civil War after receiving amnesty in 1967. The IYC strongly advocated for May 16th to be declared a national public holiday in Boro’s honour, and proposed renaming the Port Harcourt International Airport or key federal institutions after him to immortalize his legacy. While commending Bayelsa State for efforts in preserving Boro’s memory, the Council urged Rivers State to follow suit. Calling for unity within the Ijaw nation, the IYC emphasized solidarity and collective support for Ijaw leaders in government. They praised key figures such as High Chief Dennis Otuaro (PAP), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku (NDDC), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri (Minister of State for Petroleum), and High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) of Tantita Security, stressing the need to defend and promote Ijaw interests nationwide. The Council also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to swiftly implement ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency and condemned attempts to smuggle arms into Delta State, calling for urgent action from security agencies. On Rivers State politics, the IYC appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider and lift the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, advocating his return to full governance. They also commended the President for signing the Nigeria Maritime University Bill, establishing the South South Development Commission, and renewing Tantita’s security contract. Furthermore, the IYC called on governors of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers to ensure development reaches Ijaw communities within their states, emphasizing fairness and inclusion. In conclusion, the IYC, through its Spokesman, Amb. (Dr) Binebai Yerin Princewill, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the struggle for justice, equity, and development for the Ijaw nation. The Council expressed gratitude to its founding fathers, member organizations, and current leadership for their contributions to a united and progressive Ijaw people.

UTME: Reps Seek Establishment Of One CBT Centre Per LG
The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to establish at least one computer-based testing (CBT) centre in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas for the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This resolution was reached during Thursday’s plenary session, following the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) admission of technical glitches in the 2025 UTME. Lawmakers stated that the initiative would help prevent similar issues in the future. The House also appealed for calm in light of JAMB’s public acknowledgement of the errors. In a related development, the Senate last month proposed a similar plan, noting that provisions would be included in the 2026 budget to set up CBT centres in all 774 LGAs. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Mohammed Dandutse, who monitored the 2025 UTME, highlighted the lack of CBT centres in some areas as a major concern. He said, “In making it easy for candidates seeking admissions into universities or other tertiary institutions through UTME, the ICT centres must be made available in all the 774 local government councils across the country. “I am from Katsina South senatorial district, where only two out of the 11 local government councils have ICT centres for UTME. “Since the examination is computer-based, centres for it need to be made available across the 774 local government councils in the country. In doing this, this committee of the senate, in collaboration with our colleagues in the house of representatives, shall facilitate budgetary provisions for it in the 2026 fiscal year.”
