US Resumes Student Visas For Foreigners, Demands Social Media Access
The United States has resumed the previously suspended student visa application process for foreign nationals, now introducing a new requirement for enhanced screening. Applicants will be mandated to provide access to their social media accounts for review as part of the vetting procedure. According to the U.S. Department of State, this move aims to strengthen the background check process for all visa seekers. In May, the government had temporarily paused the scheduling of new visa interviews for prospective international students intending to study in the U.S. The department’s spokesperson, in a statement, said a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right. “We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to U.S. national security. “Under new guidance, the department will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting, including online presence, of all student and exchange visitor applicants in the F, M, and J nonimmigrant classifications. “To facilitate this vetting, all applicants for F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas will be instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to public.” It also announced that the U.S. overseas posts will resume scheduling F, M, and J nonimmigrant visa applications soon. The State Department said it was “committed to protecting the nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through its visa process”. It also advised visa applicants to check the relevant embassy or consulate website for appointment availability. “Every visa adjudication is a national security decision,” the statement stressed. “The United States must be vigilant during the visa issuance process to ensure that those applying for admission into the United States do not intend to harm Americans and our national interests,” it said. The statement demanded that all applicants credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sort, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms for their admission. Nigeria currently leads Africa as the number one source of international students enrolling in the United States, with about 20,000 students, and ranks 17th globally.

Delta Police Mandates Free Bail For Minor Offences
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has instructed all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and other personnel within the command to offer unconditional bail to individuals arrested for bailable offences, especially minor offences and misdemeanors. This directive aligns with a recent order from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and is aimed at preventing the unlawful overnight detention of suspects accused of minor infractions. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, members of the public are encouraged to screenshot and store the announcement on their phones for future reference. Edafe stressed that suspects involved in such offences should not be held overnight in police custody as long as they present a credible surety. The statement reads: "In compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun Phd NPM, the Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Olufemi Abaniwonda has issued a firm directive to DPOs and officers of the command that henceforth all suspects involved in bailable offenses such as simple offenses or misdemeanors should be granted bail unconditionally and they must not be made to sleep in the cell. Senate Raises Alarm Over ₦200trn ‘Unaccounted Funds’ In NNPC Coffers
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts, led by Senator Aliyu Wadada, has expressed grave concern over glaring discrepancies amounting to trillions of naira in the audited financial statements of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), describing the findings as deeply troubling and astonishing. During an investigative hearing on Wednesday, where NNPC's Chief Financial Officer, Dapo Segun, appeared before the committee, lawmakers highlighted the lack of detailed documentation to justify huge legal and audit expenses. They also pointed to conflicting figures in reported receivables totaling over N210 trillion from 2017 to 2023. The panel said, “Legal fees were accrued without any explanation or documentation regarding the legal services rendered. The auditors’ fees raise similar questions. There are no clear justifications. Everything we’ve seen and heard from the audited financial statements is troubling.” Senator Wadada further stated that the main concern is with the receivables. “Trillions of naira are in question, and the new document they presented this afternoon doesn’t match what’s already in their audited report. It’s completely independent and contradictory,” he said. The committee underscored that the concerns stem directly from the analysis of NNPC’s audited financial statements spanning 2017 to 2023, not from speculation. The committee has now handed over a list of 11 queries to NNPC’s finance team and given them one week to return with answers. Senator Wadada also warned that the matter would not be swept under the rug, especially as the Tinubu administration, under its Renewed Hope agenda, seeks transparency and accountability in public finance.
