N47bn Yearly Power Bill Unsustainable, FG Defends N10bn Aso Rock Solar Installation
The Federal Government has defended its decision to install solar panels at the Aso Rock Villa, the nation’s seat of power. Mustapha Abdulahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, said the move was prompted by the unsustainable cost of electricity at the Villa, which currently stands at about ₦47 billion annually. He noted that this was why President Bola Tinubu approved ₦10 billion for the establishment of a solar power grid to serve the presidential complex. Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, Abdulahi explained that the initiative aligns with the President’s agenda to diversify the country's energy sources and reduce the cost of governance. He added that the solar project would ensure a steady supply of clean energy, generate employment, encourage innovation among local engineers, and ease the burden on the national grid. Abdulahi also disclosed that some of the administration’s energy initiatives have attracted attention from development partners, who have committed about $5.3 billion in investments—particularly toward grid expansion. In 2024, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had published an advertorial titled “Notice of Disconnection,” revealing that the Aso Rock Villa owed ₦923.87 million in unpaid electricity bills. AEDC also issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Villa and 86 government MDAs to settle a total debt of ₦47.1 billion or face disconnection. Following this, President Tinubu stepped in and directed that the Villa’s debt be paid promptly. According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President acted after reconciling the account between the State House and AEDC, and assured that all outstanding bills would be cleared.

Believers Shouldn’t Associate With The Poor~ Pastor Ibiyeomie Replies Critics
Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder of Salvation Ministries, has reaffirmed his recent controversial comments on poverty, insisting that Christians should avoid close relationships with the poor. In a sermon that has since gone viral, the Port Harcourt-based preacher asserted that Jesus Christ "hated poverty" and "never entered the home of a poor person" during His time on earth. Ibiyeomie cited this as a scriptural basis for believers to steer clear of close ties with impoverished individuals. Amid mounting backlash, the cleric addressed the issue in a follow-up sermon on Sunday, stating that his remarks were divinely inspired and affirmed by the Holy Spirit. “Some persons called me and said the internet was on fire,” he said. “I wasn’t interested, but out of curiosity, I checked. Then I asked the Holy Spirit to tell me if I’m wrong and I would take the blame.” He continued, “He [the Holy Spirit] was dictating God’s word to me verbatim in the bathroom. He said, ‘You’re not wrong, you’re right.’” Ibiyeomie explained that the Holy Spirit drew a parallel between sin and poverty, suggesting that just as Christians are urged not to associate closely with sinners, they should also distance themselves from the poor. “He said, ‘Do you like sin?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘You can only lead people to Christ, but you cannot be a friend to a sinner.’ He said, ‘If a believer is mixing with sinners, everybody gets angry. So if a believer mixes with the poor, everybody should be angry,'” Ibiyeomie recounted. He added, “He [the Holy Spirit] said, ‘I was made poor so you can be rich. So poverty is not of me.’” While emphasising that he is not opposed to helping the needy, Pastor Ibiyeomie made a distinction between offering charity and forming close associations with those who live in poverty. He stressed that poverty is more a mindset than a financial condition. “You can help the poor, but don’t associate with the poor. You don’t have money does not mean you’re poor. Poverty is mentality. And he gave me scriptures,” he said. The preacher added: “‘I paid a price for sin, poverty and sickness’. Why will you reject sin and accept poverty. And those who reject poverty in line with God’s word, these three things will never be identified with you.”

NiMet Workers Begin Indefinite Strike, Shut Down Meteorological Services
Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) began an indefinite strike on Wednesday, halting all meteorological services across the country. Our correspondent observed that the strike kicked off at exactly 7:00 a.m., with NiMet staff and union members marching around airport premises carrying placards. Some employees reportedly spent the night at the agency’s offices to enforce a complete shutdown of operations. One of the workers lamented: “The situation is bad for us here in NiMet. In terms of our welfare, the salary package and everything are very low compared to our sister agency. You can see a management staff member in NiMet collecting ₦470,000, while someone in the sister agency earns about ₦1.2 million. “Any increment the Federal Government is making, we are not getting it. We provide more sensitive services than even our sister agency, but our welfare package is so poor that it cannot cover transportation, rent, or even our children’s school fees. “The working conditions are too poor. We need to be taken care of like our sister agency. We are not asking for too much — just a good condition of service that would at least make life comfortable for us to concentrate on our job. “We provide services like agro-meteorology, marine, and transportation for all industries. We offer services to them, yet our welfare is too poor. So we are calling on the government to look into our case.” Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, Paul Ogohi, condemned the conduct of some domestic airlines, while also highlighting the toll the current system is taking on NiMet staff. “Other international airlines have parked and are keeping strictly to the regulations of ICAO. British Airways has complied, and Qatar Airways has also suspended operations. But the problem we are facing is with Nigerian airlines and their pilots. These rules are meant to govern aviation operations, but we, the locals, are the ones violating these standards. It’s not right. “We should discourage it and condemn it entirely. It’s unacceptable. This kind of thing only happens in Nigeria. You can see that unprecedented deaths are occurring in NiMet, as if we are chickens. Nearly 70 per cent of our staff forecasters have high blood pressure. “Ninety per cent no longer have good vision, because we are constantly working to observe the aerodrome. We have eye defects. It is unbearable. Some of us are taking loans to pay school fees, rent, and even to come to work. “We are appealing to the Minister to please come to our aid. We are seeing changes, but those changes should extend to NiMet because we are suffering.”

Tinubu, Fubara Meet In London
Reports surfaced on Tuesday suggesting that President Bola Tinubu held a private meeting with suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, in London during his working visit. According to *The Africa Report*, the meeting was initiated by Fubara himself, but the Presidency remained tight-lipped on the issue. Efforts to confirm the development from official channels proved futile, as no one was willing to comment. However, a source familiar with the matter disclosed that this marked the first direct engagement between Tinubu and Fubara since March 18, when the President declared a state of emergency in Rivers State under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. That action led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire House of Assembly. In a national address, Tinubu cited “months of intense political instability” that had crippled governance and posed a threat to national stability. Following the suspension, the President appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as the sole administrator of the state. Sources revealed that the London meeting was aimed at resolving the prolonged political crisis. Though official details remain undisclosed, insiders said discussions focused on restoring effective governance in Rivers State. There are indications that Fubara may be reinstated before his six-month suspension ends. Notably absent from the talks was Fubara’s estranged political mentor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who is reportedly uneasy about a potential reconciliation that excludes him.

IGP Orders Withdrawal Of Police Mobile Force From Private Escort Duties
The Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector General Olukayode Egbetokun, has unveiled a major overhaul of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) aimed at strengthening internal security and enhancing its rapid-response effectiveness. The announcement was made during a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed concern over the increasing diversion of PMF officers to non-core roles, especially private and VIP escort duties, which he said had weakened the unit’s operational efficiency. Reaffirming the PMF’s role as the elite tactical wing of the police force—tasked with riot control, emergency response, and confronting violent threats—the IGP ordered the immediate withdrawal of officers from unauthorized postings. He also introduced mandatory quarterly training focused on ethics and professionalism, and directed that each squadron maintain fully equipped, combat-ready units on standby to provide swift tactical support when needed. “To address this, the IGP has announced a series of measures including the immediate withdrawal of PMF personnel from unauthorised deployments, regular quarterly training focused on ethics and professionalism, and mandatory standby of fully equipped, combat-ready units across all Squadrons for rapid tactical support. The IGP also declared that PMF Commanders will be held accountable for the conduct of their personnel and urged them to lead proactively through regular training, inspections, and mentorship aimed at upholding discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence.” “Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to restoring the PMF to its rightful role as a disciplined and dependable tactical arm, the IGP highlighted plans to introduce new leadership strategies and capacity-building initiatives designed to meet modern security challenges and align with global best practices.” The IGP charged all PMF Squadron Commanders to embrace the reform as a professional and moral responsibility, reiterating that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to its mandate of safeguarding lives, property, and national security.”

No Manipulation In 2024 Oil Bid Round Process~ NUPRC
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has dismissed claims that the 2024 oil bid round was manipulated. In a statement issued by Mr. Bashiru Indabawa, Chairman of the 2024 Bid Round Committee, the Commission maintained that the process was conducted transparently and in strict adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act and relevant regulations. A total of 25 companies emerged as winners in the licensing round announced in December last year. Notable winners include TotalEnergies, MRS, SIFAX & Royal Gate Consortium, First E&P, and Sahara Deepwater Resources, among others. Indabawa stated that “the NUPRC recently undertook the initiation and conclusion of the 2024 Oil Bid Round. This process was characterised by a comprehensive and rigorous framework designed to ensure transparency and stakeholder engagement. Among the key components of this meticulous process were public hearings held at various stages, where all relevant industry stakeholders were encouraged to participate and voice their perspectives. “These hearings facilitated a collaborative atmosphere, allowing for input from regulatory agencies and all parties operating in, and oversighting industry operations. Their involvement was not limited to the final stages of the bid round; they played an integral role from the very outset, contributing to the development of regulations and guiding the bid process. This level of engagement and procedural rigour underscores a commitment to fostering a fair and competitive bidding environment in the Nigerian oil sector. “The selection process for the 2024 oil bid round was a comprehensive and inclusive event, involving a diverse array of stakeholders such as the International Oil Companies (IOCs), various local and international firms, the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), relevant government agencies, civil society organisations, and both national and international media representatives. “This process was conducted in a manner that upheld the principles of competitiveness, openness and transparency, as mandated by section 73 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA)”. Indabawa who is also the Executive Commissioner in charge of Exploration and Acreage Management in NUPRC, stated further that “the meticulous processes and regulatory frameworks established by the NUPRC during the 2024 Oil Bid Round demonstrate a commitment to transparency and fairness in the industry. Allegations of misconduct, particularly those lacking substantive evidence, distract from the real advancements being made in the oil sector and contribute to a culture of misinformation”.
